Darren Keet, the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, has landed in South Africa as he prepares for the next chapter in his career.

‘Popeye’ joined OH Leuven in the Belgium second division after leaving Bidvest Wits at the end of the 2018/19 season, but his time there was not ideal having managed only a handful of appearances until leaving the club last month.

Even with a lack of game time, Keet still made the Bafana squad for the Africa Cup of Nations last year, though he deputised for Ronwen Williams, who was the national team first choice goalie at the tournament in Egypt.

Keet was hoping for an improved stint with Leuven this season, but after just one appearance since the campaign kicked off, the 31-year-old saw his spell there come to an end, the club confirming a “mutual termination” of his contract late in October.

Over the weekend, there were images of Keet on his social media arriving in Cape Town with his wife and two kids, fueling speculation that a move to a Premier Soccer League club was imminent for the shot stopper.

Siya sources have informed the crew that Keet held talks with Cape Umoya over a possible deal, but it is now unlikely to materialise due to his own personal ambitions to still play abroad in the near future.

It’s thought there is interest outside SA and due to the FIFA rule that a player can only be registered by two clubs in one season, Keet does not want to risk closing the door on an opportunity to return overseas in January.

Indications are that he could decide to keep fit at Umoya ahead of a possible move in the coming months, but for now sources have ruled out an official return to the PSL.
