The big switch to Major League Soccer in the US for one of South Africa’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations stars has been confirmed.

It was announced earlier this month that Kamohelo Mokotjo would be leaving Brentford FC in the English Championship having spent three fruitful years there, although the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier Division recently.

With a fresh start on the cards, it has now been made official that the midfielder has signed for FC Cincinnati ahead of the start of the new MLS season later this year. Mokotjo had become a free agent, and the US outfit used "targeted allocation money" to lure him to Ohio. This means he is considered a marquee signing.

The 29-year-old is thought to have been keen on remaining in the UK as he pursues his EPL dream, but with a switch to the US comes great exposure and gives Mokotjo the fresh start he would have wanted.

He moved to Brentford after becoming a household name in the Netherlands, where he played for FC Twente and was a constant feature for three years in the first team. He was believed to have been the Dutch side’s record signing – making over a 100 appearances.

Mokotjo has 22 Bafana Bafana caps and was among the core players for then coach Stuart Baxter when they reached the quarterfinals of the AFCON last year.
