It has been revealed that a former Liverpool defender rejected the chance to join LaLiga giants FC Barcelona in the January transfer window, as he wasn't interested in being a "substitute for Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti".

The five-time UEFA Champions League winners bolstered their squad during the most recent transfer window, snapping up midfielder Frenkie de Jong from Ajax Amsterdam for a fee of €75 million (R1.16 billion). In addition, they also signed defenders Jean-Clair Todibo from Toulouse and Emerson Atletico Mineiro, with the latter to arrive in July upon the expiration of his loan deal with Real Betis.
The Blaugrana were said to be interested in securing the services of 34-year-old defender Martin Škrtel from Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe as a back-up option, however the Slovak was not keen on playing second-fiddle to Pique and Umtiti, according to Mithat Halis, a source in the company that represents Skrtel.
"Barcelona wanted to sign him (Škrtel) and were insisting on him because they needed a central defender that was a reliable alternative," he is quoted as telling AS.
"But the player didn't agree because he did not want to be a substitute for Pique and Umtiti.
"I think he is a better centre-half than Clement Lenglet. On the other hand, Martin Škrtel is happy in Istanbul and has an important role to play in Fenerbahçe. He did not want to be third choice at Barcelona.
"They (Barça reps) saw the player in the game between Slovakia and the Ukraine and appreciated again that Škrtel is the leader of his team, but Škrtel told us he wants to continue playing in Turkey."

Skrtel concluded his eight-year stay at Anfield when he signed for Fenerbahçe in July 2016. The defender has since amassed a total of 106 appearances for Fenerbahçe, finding the back of the net on 18 occasions, while being on hand to create a further six strikes.
