With a World Cup-winning trio being axed from Germany's national team recently, here are 10 other footballers who suffered similar fates, including a former Manchester United striker and Africa's most decorated player ever.

German coach Joachim Low sent shockwaves throughout the football world on Tuesday, when he revealed that he would not consider Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller for future national team call-ups, citing a need "to give the team a new face".

The trio were part of Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning side, but were also part of the team that underperformed at the 2018 World Cup, crashing out in the group stage, which proved to be Die Mannschaft's earliest exit from the tournament in 80 years.

Boateng, Hummels and Muller are, however, not the only footballers who have seen their international careers go up in flames due to decisions made by those at the helm.

Four-time African Player of the Year Samuel Eto'o endured a turbulent relationship with his country of birth throughout his international career, which spanned almost two decades. Widely considered as one of the greatest strikers of all time, the former FC Barcelona and Inter Milan star represented the Indomitable Lions in four World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations, but endured his fair share of controversy too.

In 2011, Eto'o was suspended for 15 games by the Cameroonian Football Federation after refusing to play in a friendly in Algeria. An intervention by the country's president, Paul Biya, saw Eto's ban being reduced to just eight months. However, he again refused to play in the first leg of an AFCON play-off against Cape Verde in 2012, citing Cameroon's poor organisational skills. The striker subsequently returned for the second leg of the clash after being requested to do so by his country's prime minister. Eto'o announced his retirement from international football after the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Former Manchester United star Carlos Tevez represented Argentina at two FIFA World Cups, but failed to appear at the 2014 tournament, when La Albiceleste finished as losing finalists, after completely falling out of favour during Alejandro Sabella's stint with the national team.

The former Juventus talisman infamously fell out with club manager Roberto Mancini in a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich in a UEFA Champions League encounter in 2011 after refusing to come on in the defeat to the Bavarian giants. His subsequent lack of playing time proved detrimental for his international career, with his last involvement coming in the quarter-final of the 2011 Copa America loss to eventual champions Uruguay. The Argentine failed to garner a national team call-up for three years before returning to the fold after Sabella's resignation.
