Having won a record 20 league titles, the Old Trafford club is one of the English top flight's most successful club in the Premier League era. However, United have also had their fair share of flop signings, although some of them went on to enjoy a great deal of success at other teams.
Diego Forlan arrived at the Theatre of Dreams with high expectations in 2002, after Sir Alex Ferguson paid £6.9 million (R128 million) to secure his services from Argentina outfit Independiente.
Forlan subsequently failed to flatter, spending three unsuccessful seasons in England before reviving his career with Villarreal and later Atletico Madrid, with whom he won the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.
The Uruguayan also picked up the Golden Ball award at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and was selected for the team of the tournament in addition to being the competition's joint-top goalscorer with five goals.
Barcelona's defensive stalwart Gerard Pique penned his first professional contract with United, despite spending the majority of his youth career at the Spanish giants' famous La Masia academy.
With the ever-reliable defensive partnership of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand largely keeping Pique sidelined at Old Trafford, he re-signed for Barca in 2008, for a reported fee of £5 million (R93 million), and would go on to prove many of his detractors wrong.
Pique has not only cemented his spot in the Blaugrana's starting XI, but the three-time Champions League winner has since established himself as one of the world's best centre-backs.
Wilfried Zaha is another who had a miserable stint with the Red Devils. The Ivory Coast international joined the Premier League giants in a five-and-a-half-year deal in January 2013, but was never really given an opportunity to prove himself. The winger gradually adapted to the demands of the English top flight after enjoying loan spells with Crystal Palace and Cardiff City, and particularly impressed at the former, prompting the Selhurst Park outfit to snap him up permanently in May 2015.
Since then, the 26-year-old has become arguably Palace's go-to-guy in the attack, and several top clubs are said to be monitoring his situation with keen interest, including United.
Others stars who failed to impress at United but went on to achieve success elsewhere include Carlos Tevez and Memphis Depay – click through the gallery to see all seven players who thrived after leaving the Manchester club, according to Squawka!
