5 Out Of 10 Gone – The Curse Of Africa Cup Of Nations' Top-Earning Coaches

Five of the 10 highest-paid coaches at the recent 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, including the three top earners, have now left their posts since the completion of the continental showpiece.

With Baxter leaving his role on Friday, the former Kaizer Chiefs boss is not the only coach among the top-earning tacticians at Afcon 2019 to leave his post after the tournament.

In fact, five of the 10 highest-paid coaches at the tournament have left their positions since the competition came to an end.

Former Egypt coach Javier Aguirre, who was believed to be the highest-paid coach at the African showpiece with a salary of €108 000 (R1.7 million) a month, was fired after Bafana shocked the tournament hosts in the round of 16.

Second-placed Clarence Seedorf, said to be on €96 000 (R1.5 million) a month with 2017 champions Cameroon, was sacked after exiting the tournament following a 3-2 defeat to Nigeria at the last 16 stage.

Morocco boss Herve Renard also left his role following a disappointing last 16 exit via penalties against Benin. The two-time Afcon winner reportedly earned €80 000 (R1.26 million) monthly during his stint with Morocco, and has since been unveiled as Saudi Arabia's latest coach.

Guinea coach Paul Put is the fifth coach from Afcon's top earners list who has left his job since the tournament's completion. The Belgian pocketed €30 000 (R490 000) a month but was sacked after Guinea's 3-0 defeat to eventual winners Algeria in the round of 16.

With his reported monthly salary of €31 000 (R515 000), Baxter was among the 10 highest-paid coaches at Afcon 2019, and it remains to be seen who Safa will appoint as his permanent replacement.
