SportPesa Clubhouse column ambassador, Doctor Khumalo, shares his feelings on this past weekend’s MTN8 action. In addition, he also gives his take on moving clubs at the highest level, using Cristiano Ronaldo as his prime example.

"We had a break from league football, with the MTN8 taking centre stage this past weekend and I must say all the teams delivered someunbelievable football. I would like to congratulate the four teams that have made it through to the semi-finals and wish them all the best in their games. We will see the repeat of the Tshwane derby when Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United battle it out for a place in the final to face either Highlands Park or Polokwane City, who will be battling it out in the other two-legged semi-final.

On players changing teams

"We saw some interesting individual performances this past weekend and, for that reason, I decided to take a closer look at what some people might not be aware of. What changes the form of a player from one particular team to another? What influence or change does swopping teams have on a player? Let me try to break it down in layman’s terms. When we look at our European counterparts and some of the great players who changed clubs, with Cristiano Ronaldo who moved from Real Madrid to join Juventus, for example. At Madrid, he was dubbed as the team’s ‘Messiah’ because he would always rise to the occasion whenever the chips were down. He would singlehandedly influence the team’s results by either scoring or creating something out of nothing.

"Now he gets to Juve and continues from where he had left off, although he may not have done it to the same degree so far. In most cases, he’s done tremendously well even when we thought his team was losing a game and he would come out of nowhere and shine. He does the same thing even at national team level and the evidence is there for everyone to see."
