SportPesa Clubhouse column ambassador, Doctor Khumalo, bids farewell to another fallen football friend. The Kaizer Chiefs legend shared some insight into his time with the late David Kekana.

"Another football fraternity stalwart has, sadly, been lost. 2019 has not been good to us, as we’ve lost a number of our people this year already. Let me express my heartfelt condolences to David Kekana’s family, friends, colleagues and the entire football fraternity. David Kekana was a true gentleman in his own right. From a number of encounters with David, I always knew that he was one of my fans, one of my friends and one of my brothers. A true gentleman that has had an influence in my game both as a player and a coach. After hanging up my boots, we became even closer as I had ample time and there was no moment when we ever spoke football that David didn’t have any input. That’s just how knowledgeable and passionate he was about the game. He would say things that I didn’t even know or remember about South African football.

"David would even remind me of things I did on the field of play that I sometimes got pleasantly surprised that he remembered them. Not even once, up to his last day on earth, have I seen or heard him quarrel with anyone. People might think I’m probably saying this only because the man is no more, but that’s not the case. I’m singing his praises because David was a true gentleman. We were in one WhatsApp group where we chatted about a lot of things and I’ve never seen him argue with anyone. He was on the verge of compiling a DVD that showed how I used to create goals, dominate the opposition, among other things. I don’t know where he was headed to with this, but he just told me he wanted to get permission to work on that project and I was more than happy for him to do it.

"From the look of things, it is a DVD he would have loved to see circulating because he had his own views on creativity on the field of play. The last interview I was talking to him about was when they were profiling Coach Stuart Baxter and we were at our favourite hangout spot in Fourways. At the time, I had no idea I was bidding farewell to a good friend of mine," added Khumalo.
