SportPesa Clubhouse column ambassador, Doctor Khumalo has touched on the tactical approach from the Bafana Bafana squad as they are on their way back home to South Africa after failing to beat Nigeria in the quarter-final round of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Khumalo went on to speak about the incredible victory against Egypt and how disappointing the supporters were on social media with their reactions with the result.
“While celebrating the victory, one couldn’t help but notice just how far behind we are as South African football supporters compared to the rest of the world. Banter is necessary and healthy but I think we should be more educational in our football engagements. The partisan that’s been displayed by football followers on social media is disappointing, to say the least. Whenever Bafana Bafana players put on the national team jersey, their club allegiance cease to exist and the same should happen even with the supporters. We should support the team, not individual players because they are from the teams we love. This dangerous phenomenon will take us back to the days when certain teams’ players were booed by the supporters from rival teams whenever they put on the national team jersey. You don’t want a situation where some players enjoy more support from the South African supporters than others by virtue of the teams they play for, when they are all representing the same country. All players are equal and should be treated as such.
“It is really disturbing to see passionate supporters wasting their time and energy on frivolous subjects when we should be engaging on more pertinent topics of the game. We should be discussing tactics, formations and even educate one another on the dynamics of the game instead of applying bullying tactics on social media. We have an excellent and immediate tool of communication that we are not utilising to our benefit. If we engaged intelligently, more and more supporters would understand the role played by Lebo Mothiba, for instance, without putting him through what the late Bafana Bafana legend, Philemon Masinga went through. The young lad doesn’t deserve the harsh and uninformed criticism levelled against him when he’s hardly two years into his Bafana career. He’s not your Benni McCarthy, he’s certainly not your Daniel Mudau, Jerry Sikhosana or Mark Williams. You’d think we would have learned our lesson from the bad treatment we meted out to the late Phil but that doesn’t seem to be the case.”
The Kaizer Chiefs legend when on to speak about the likes of Kingston Nkhatha and Thamsanqa Gabuza who have been victims of abuse from the crowd.
