This Saturday, the local soccer fraternity will be glued to their screens as the final league matches take to the stage. Supporters will be flipping through channels and flocking to the stadiums to witness what will go down as one of the most competitive seasons in South African football history.

The battle will continue on the field as the fight for league honours, Top Eight and survival in the relegation zone will take place.

SportPesa Clubhouse column, ambassador, Doctor Khumalo has touched on the final stretch and pointed out the clubs that have added the spice to the action in the league.

Check out Doc Khumalo’s SportPesa Betting tips for this week

“The final weekend of the Absa Premiership is finally upon us and there’s no turning back. We’ve been talking so much about the three phases of the league, which are the chasing pack, the Top Eight and the relegation battle. Interestingly, with one round of football to be played, there’s still no clear favourites and I have been saying the time will come when we find out who’s who in the zoo. That time has finally arrived and come Saturday at 17h00, we will all know who finishes where. Some will be popping their champagnes, while others will be wiping tears after failing to meet their season targets.

“At the top, it has been up and down, but over the last few weeks, it then became clear that it would be between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. Having said that, we should give credit to teams like Bidvest Wits, Cape Town City, Polokwane City – who have been unbelievable – SuperSport United, Highlands Park and Kaizer Chiefs for making it such an interesting battle. At some point, most of these teams looked like real title contenders until they crumbled along the way. I also want to give Benni McCarthy credit because there was a stage when he was on a double and possibly a treble, after winning the MTN8 and challenging for both the Nedbank Cup and the league until the latter stages of both competitions. He’s done really well considering the fact that he’s still fairly new in the game. I’m not talking about playing or coaching, but being a head coach. I think he deserves a lot of credit and what more can you really ask for from someone as young as he is in coaching?”

The Amakhosi legend went on to talk about Mamelodi Sundowns’ CAF Champions League elimination and explained why the club deserves to be credited, despite not reaching the final round.
