Another experienced footballer, who made a name for himself in South Africa’s topflight with a number of clubs over the years, has officially announced his retirement from the game.

Former Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu striker Siyabonga Nomvethe (41) has already announced his retirement, and was followed by ex-Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City midfielder Teko Modise (36), whose retirement was confirmed last week.

AmaZulu goalkeeper, Energy Murambadoro, has become the latest PSL star to announce his retirement at the age of 36.

“AmaZulu and Zimbabwean veteran goalkeeper, Energy Murambadoro (36) has called time to his playing days after a long and illustrious career which spans over 16 years as a professional footballer. Murambadoro bid farewell to his teammates on 15 May at a club breakfast gathering,” AmaZulu confirmed on the club’s official website.

Among a number of Mzansi clubs that the Zimbabwean shot-stopper played for since his arrival from CAPS United in 2003, are Hellenic, Bidvest Wits and Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Murambadoro also had stint with Bnei Sakhnin FC in Israeli during his career.

“I’m happy to announce that I’ve hung up my playing boots and gloves. I’ve had to consider a lot of things regarding this. I’m proud of the road I’ve travelled over the years in my career,” the goalkeeper told AmaZulu’s official website.

“Now is the right time to pass the baton to the younger generation of goalkeepers. I’m of the belief that here, at AmaZulu there is exciting talent coming up with the likes of Siyabonga Mbatha, Neil Boshoff and Yao (Jean Noel Amonome) all making steady progress with every chance that comes,” he added.

“I’d like to thank Usuthu management, the technical team, my teammates and the supporters for the support throughout my time at the club,” said Murambadoro.

In thanking the goalkeeper for his contribution at the club, AmaZulu’s general manager Lunga Sokhela said, as quoted on the club’s website, “We thank Energy for his professionalism since joining the AmaZulu family from day one. He has been a good example to the youngsters, and all involved behind the brand. We wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.”

Meanwhile, there could be more players calling time on their PSL careers. One star who has already hinted about possibly hanging up his boots is Free State Stars veteran midfielder and team captain Paulus Masehe.

The former Sundowns and Pirates player will be turning 36 in September.

@thabanakhosi bona absa gives each team a Stipend of 1.5 million or more every month to maintain the team at the high level. Plus a winner gets 10 M. They are spending more.

@Dosalenco no ways the money the teams received monthly is not from ABSA .Is from the gate taking and the tv rights. Remember the team doesn't take the whole gate taking
