Mwape Musonda ended an almost two-year spell without an Absa Premiership hat-trick over the weekend, but who preceded him with a triple strike in the top flight?

The Zambian hitman solidified his place at the top of the 2018/19 scoring charts as he hit his 10th, 11th and 12th goals of the season in the impressive 3-2 comeback win over Chippa United, hitting double figures for the third season in a row.

If you want to remember the last hat-trick in the South African top-flight then you’ll have to cast your mind back to May 2017 to find it, when Rhulani Manzini slammed three past SuperSport United in 2016/17 season.

Since the start of the 2015/16 campaign, there have been 10 Absa Premiership hat-tricks – including Musonda’s latest – though six of them came in the 2015/16 season and there wasn’t a single one in 2017/18 as the league suffered a bit of a dry spell in the goals department.

In the same time period we’ve had two players – Gabadinho Mhango and Thobani Mncwango – reach four goals in a single game, though the regularity with which we’re seeing hat-trick heroes has certainly dried up.

Now, with just a few games left of the current campaign, fans will be itching to see other strikers follow in Musonda’s footsteps and start banging in some goals of their own before it comes to an end.
