The Clever Boys were keen to bounce back from last week's defeat to Baroka, as  Gavin Hunt went for Carl Lark and Gift Motupa upfront, with Terrence Dzvukamanja and Xolisi Macuphu dropping to the bench.

Polokwane, meanwhile, searched for a third straight victory against a side, who they have not lost to since the 2016/2017 league campaign.

It had been a tight affair in the first half as both sides jostled for possession without creating much at either end, while there was the odd stoppage.

With three minutes remaining in the stanza, Gavin Hunt's charges broke the deadlock thanks to a strike from Deon Hotto, who moves on to two goals for the season.

It was more of the same in the second half, which prompted Rise and Shine to throw on Charlton Mashumba for Sibusiso Hlubi on 55 minutes before Lark made way for Macuphu five minutes later.

Despite the introductions in the second half, Polokwane were unable to find a way past the Wits defence and have now missed the chance to move top.
