The Premier Soccer League has delivered on its promise to take legal action against the South African Football Association over the OUTsurance sponsorship which was launched in September last year.
Likely to have been pushed by Absa – the title sponsors, who feel the partnership between the country’s motherbody and the insurance company devalues their support of the local game – the PSL is headed to court.
Details of the hearing are still a bit sketchy, however, the Siya crew understands that member clubs were informed during the Board of Governors assembly last week in Johannesburg of these developments.
It’s been five months since SAFA announced its R50-million partnership with OUTsurance, which is aimed at improving the referees' programme from the top division right down to amateur football.
PSL chairman Irvin Khoza hit back at a statement where SAFA insisted that it had the last word when it comes to running football in the country. Khoza, at the time, told journalists that those remarks were “insulting”, and vowed to seek legal counsel on the way forward.
It appears he has indeed gone that route, according to information that has reached the Siya crew. With the matter being sub judice, neither the PSL or SAFA could comment when contacted by the Siya crew.
