A final decision on whether the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be used at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in three months’ time will be taken in May, the Siya crew has been informed.
The new technology was introduced to football in 2017 and has split the opinion of coaches, players, pundits and fans, and made its debut on the continent when it was first used in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final between Egypt’s Al Ahly and Esperance of Tunisia in November last year.
A Siya source indicated that CAF – the football mother body in Africa – was contemplating the use of VAR at the Afcon from the quarter-final stage onwards. It is understood then there will only be confirmation of this in May, shortly after match officials are taken through rigorous courses in Cairo, Egypt.
On Monday, the South African Football Association said in a statement that CAF will also hold workshops here in SA from March 26 to 30 with selected referees from around the continent.
“CAF have embarked on a mission to ensure that Africa is well equipped with modern day football innovations and technology as part of the new leadership of CAF president Ahmed Ahmed,” the statement read.
VAR was responsible for several big decisions this week in the UEFA Champions League and came in for criticisms and praise from around the world.
