A South African has never won the prestigious Marc-Vivien Foé Award in France, but a Bafana Bafana star could join the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gervinho and André Ayew this year.

Lebo Mothiba, who has been critical for Strasbourg in his first season at the club, helped his club win their first title since 2005 with their Coupe de la Ligue win over the weekend, and just a few days later was named in RFI and France 24’s list of 11 nominees for the 2019 edition of the award.

The Prix Marc-Vivien Foé – named in honour of the late Cameroon international - is an award for the best African player in France’s Ligue 1. In the past, it’s been won by some of the continent’s biggest names, and Bafana’s young forward will be hoping to join them.
In fact, the 23-year-old is the first South African player to have even been nominated for the award, let alone win it, so the fact that he has been recognised in the top 11 African players in the league is an achievement on its own.

Some of the previous winners include Marouane Chamakh, Younès Belhanda and Vincent Enyeama on top of the aforementioned Aubameyang, Gervinho and Ayew, and ‘Lebotelli’ would be in good company if he can beat off competition from the likes of Max-Alain Gradel, Nicolas Pépé and Bertrand Traoré. The final three nominees will be unveiled in May.
Do you think Mothiba can win the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé?
