Venue: Mbombela Stadium
Orlando Pirates endured another difficult night at Mbombela Stadium after suffering a 3-0 defeat to SuperSport United in the Absa Premiership.
The Buccaneers made three changes from their league opening victory over Bloemfontein Celtic, with Justice Chabalala, Fortune Makaringe and Gabadinho Mhango the new faces in the line-up. Meanwhile, Thembinkosi Lorch was named on the bench for the first time this season.
There was a brief delay in the match just after the first quarter of an hour after Bucs goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands was rushed back to the dressing room to change his kit to an alternative strip, as his colours clashed with that of SuperSport.
However, that stoppage did not affect the flow of the game that much but it offered the visitors a chance to launch attacks of their own, as Makaringe almost broke the deadlock in the 26th minute with a glancing header at the near post, that was smothered by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Kaitano Tembo’s charges should have been ahead in the 31st minute after Sandilands attempted a risky back-pass to defender Chabalala, who slipped which allowed Sipho Mbule to pounce, however the midfielder's striker sailed inches wide of the bottom corner..
Pirates made another horrible error at the back four minutes later as Thabiso Monyane headed a ball back towards Sandilands inside the box, but this time they were the punished as Bradley Grobler intercepted and poked the ball beyond Sandilands to hand the hosts the lead.
Milutin Sredojevic’s troops were still under pressure in the early stages of the second stanza, despite introducing Lorch and Justin Shonga.
However, Grobler made it 2-0 for United ten minutes into the second stanza, with a flying strike towards the roof of the net after Bucs failed to clear their lines.
Sredojevic’s troops were desperate to get back to the game, going forward in numbers and they paid the price for as Ghampani Lungu made it 3-0 for Matsatsantsa 21 minutes before time, with a low strike past Sandilands after he was sent clear on goal by Grobler.
Pirates showed fighting spirit in the latter phase but they just could not combine in the last third, with the United defence resilient and they managed to clinch a 3-0 victory in the end.
