After being linked with Neymar and Paul Pogba during the latest transfer window, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has explained why the club failed to sign the two superstars.
Los Blancos spent more than €300 million (R4.8 billion) on new players as they looked to rebuild after last season's disappointing campaign, but missed out on two of the biggest names in the game.
Speaking at a meeting with club partners and officials, and as reported by Marca, Perez revealed his plans for the season and explained the reasons behind the failed moves for Neymar and Pogba.
The 72-year-old reportedly revealed that Real's hands were tied when it came to the France international as his club, Manchester United, refused to sell him, while he also dismissed the links to Neymar as being fabricated by the media.
Perez also shared his belief that the record 13-time Uefa Champions League winners would return to their best in the 2019/20 campaign.
"The success has made us lose intensity and we have to recover it," he said.
"These players and this coach have made us champions and so it will be again. Last season was not good and we must reflect from the self-criticism.
Real have recorded one win and two draws from the opening three LaLiga matches this season, and play host to Levante this weekend.
