Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has explained why he decided to take Cristiano Ronaldo off in their shock UEFA Champions League loss on Tuesday.

Ronaldo got United off to a good start after 13 minutes, but a red card for Aaron Wan-Bissaka allowed Young Boys back into the contest as they went on to claim a 2-1 on the night.

The Portuguese superstar was surprisingly taken off for Nemanja Matic in the 72nd minute with the score still level at 1-1, but the Norwegian tactician has insisted they are trying to look after the 36-year-old.

"The game had gone 70-odd minutes, they had been running a lot, both on Saturday and today," Solskjaer explained, as per Sky Sports.

"The astroturf takes its toll as well and we wanted Nemanja's experience to keep hold of the ball and Jesse [Lingard]'s legs.

"Ronaldo is exceptional... But we have to look after him as well and it felt like the right moment to take him off."

The United manager also refused to criticise Wan-Bissaka for the red card in the first half, and instead blamed the surface at Stadion Wankdorf.

"That's a little bit the astroturf. Aaron gets a touch that's too far and he gets the ball but he follows through. It's hard to argue against the referee," he added.

"But then he didn't go through his ankle, he hit him on the top of his foot."
