Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to have set their sights on a previous member of the Bidvest Wits technical team now that he’s unattached.

The Brazilians are always looking to improve the club’s coaching staff – whether it is the senior team or the youth sides – and this was evident three months ago when “the prodigal son” Rulani Mokwena returned to the set-up.

Mokwena spent two and a half years at Orlando Pirates as an assistant coach and the final six months of his contract with the Buccaneers at Chippa United having been seconded there for the remainder of the season pre-Covid.

Now, Sundowns are said to be hot on the heels of Dillion Sheppard and are keen to lure their former player to Chloorkop for a role in their development structures.

The 41-year-old worked at Wits since retiring at the very same club three years ago and coach Gavin Hunt moved quickly to rope him in as a member of his technical team alongside Paul Johnstone and Tyrone Damon.

But with the Clever Boys now officially sold to businessman Masala Mulaudzi, who has permission to relocate the team to Limpopo and rename it Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila for the upcoming campaign, the new owners have no plans to retain the current coaching staff, Hunt having already agreed a settlement and being the front runner for the vacant Kaizer Chiefs job following Ernst Middendorp’s departure.

‘Sheppy’ spent three years during his playing days between 2006 and 2009 and won one league title under then coach Gordon Igesund.

Asked for comment in last week’s edition of Soccer Laduma regarding Sheppard’s future beyond Wits, his long-time agent Glynn Binkin of the Players’ Club agency insisted that there was no decision made yet on the way forward.

“I have had talks with Dillon about what could be next and we’ve discussed a few options, but have not decided on anything for now. We have said we will revisit the conversation at the end of the season,” Binkin told the Siya crew.
