More than a month after they were charged by the Premier Soccer League for fielding a player that was not on the original 18-man squad list, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has suggested that the club has a plan for what could result in a point being docked as punishment.
As far back as October, the reigning Absa Premiership champions were forced to make changes to their line-up in a league match at home against Bidvest Wits – but Mosimane did not use a player that was in the team list submitted to the match commissioner on the day.
Thapelo Morena got hurt during the warm up and instead of Mosa Lebusa, the only other defender on the bench that afternoon, Sundowns recalled Arendse from the stands. This infringed on Rule 16.3.2 of the National Soccer League handbook, which prohibits a player that was not on the initial squad list being used.
“But remember that I have case that only came back a year later. So this Wayne thing was I don’t know how many moons back and it comes back now,” Mosimane told the media this week.
“You’ve got to have provision for those. Can you guys write about all these delays? Why are cases coming after a year? But don’t worry, we will make sure that it must be three plus and that thing maybe will go away – like the Ajax case.”
It was a vague response, but one which suggests Mosimane will aim for enough points to avoid being crippled should the verdict go against Downs.
