Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed that goalkeeper Thela Ngobeni will be leaving the club next month.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper has spent six years at Chloorkop, having joined them as a free agent from Kaizer Chiefs, but saw very little game time and the coach has now officially revealed that he will be moving on when his contract runs out on June 30.

“I want a younger goalkeeper,” Mosimane told journalists. “We are killing Thela’s career because he really needs to play. And he is not going to play ahead of Kennedy (Mweene) in the CAF Champions League.”

Denis Onyango is Downs’ first choice goalkeeper, with Mweene his deputy and Reyaad Pieterse third in line and also ahead of Ngobeni.

The ex-Amakhosi youth product was sent out on loan to Free State Stars twice by Sundowns and returned at the start of the 2018/19 season only to spend much of the campaign in the stands.

“He did well at Free State, but we will let him go now. He should go play – if we regret it’s okay. It will be one of those. There is no coach who will ever say he has no regrets. We have all signed players before and realised it didn’t work out,” the coach elaborated on a goalie that has already attracted plenty interest.

The Siya crew reported last Friday that Highlands Park were leading the race to sign Ngobeni, though there has yet to be any confirmation.

Chiefs remain keen, while newly promoted side Stellenbosch FC have also joined the race for his signature.

Orlando Pirates are also believed to be keeping an eye on the situation, but it is thought the Buccaneers are unlikely to be his final destination.
