As much as Kaizer Chiefs are in the process of rebuilding their squad for the new season, maintaining the support from their fans throughout is equally as important, says former Chiefs’ goalkeeper, William Shongwe.
Amakhosi have made several changes to their squad from last season, releasing a number of players from their books so far, while bringing in four new faces, namely Lazarous Kambole, Samir Nurkovic, Kearyn Baccus and James Kotei.
However, despite their promising plans for the new season, it’s not easy for the fans to forget about the past four years that Chiefs went without winning any piece of silverware.
Chiefs’ defeat to TS Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup final is still fresh in the minds of their supporters, who consequently, had plans to boycott all Chiefs’ games at the stadium thereafter.
Speaking in this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, former Chiefs shot-stopper, Shongwe, pointed out how important it is for Amakhosi to keep their supporters happy as they put themselves under pressure to ‘deliver the goods’ next season.
“I don’t have to over-emphasize the importance for Kaizer Chiefs to deliver the goods,” Shongwe said.
“The worst part, last season the team managed to get to the final of the Nedbank Cup and they lost to a National First Division side! I think that was the worst thing that could ever happen to a club of their calibre.
“Further, the supporters went as far as having a meeting after that final to say that they are going to boycott Chiefs’ games.
“The strength of Chiefs is their fan base and if they lose the support it will be the end of the club, in my humble opinion,” Shongwe added.
