Ernst Middendorp, the Kaizer Chiefs coach, has said – with absolute certainty – that there is “no chance” Itumeleng Khune will play for Bafana Bafana at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt this June.

His national team counterpart Stuart Baxter has been waiting anxiously for Khune to return to action following a shoulder injury that ruled him out for the rest of the 2018/19 season, back in January.

Baxter even suggested to the media more than a week ago that the short stopper was back in training and needed to prove his is match fit. Bafana will face Ivory Coast, Namibia and Morocco in Group D of the AFCON.

But Middendorp has dealt Baxter a major blow by revealing last night that Khune is only expected back next season – and not a minute sooner.

Speaking to the media after Chiefs played to a 1-1 draw in their Absa Premiership clash against Golden Arrows, he said, “What are you expecting me to answer? Is he fit? Seriously, let’s be honest, and it is nearly the end of April, and until now there is no ball (work) involved at all.”

Amakhosi have three league games remaining, including the Nedbank Cup final, but it now appears he won’t play a part.

“Every three weeks I have to answer this question. But there is no chance – 100 percent. If somebody dreams about having Itu Khune in the AFCON when he is not even at training, it is totally unserious. It is dishonest. He (Khune) should be focused and preparing to have a good start to the season because we have Bruce (Bvuma) and Daniel (Akpeyi) who is settling in more and more and have a high competitive quality. If the national team coach wants to call Khune for AFCON then that is his position, but our medical department has other ideas” said Middendorp.
