Junior Khanye has weighed in on Kaizer Chiefs’ progress, following the team’s impressive start to the 2019/20 Absa Premiership season.

The former midfielder is impressed with the team’s start to the season, although he says he has his doubts about the future under head coach Ernst Middendorp.

Amakhosi are at the top of the Absa Premiership log after winning three of the four matches they have played so far, while the other match ended in a draw.

“I am impressed with how Kaizer Chiefs has progressed so far this season. Winning three and drawing one from four games is impressive. My concern is that the team is conceding (Chiefs have conceded four goals). They have to be concerned. Yes, how they win matches isn’t very important right now, because they need to win at all costs. They aren’t yet the Chiefs we know – the Chiefs team that wins in style. Brilliance of individual players in certain matches is working for them,” Khanye told the Siya crew.

Chiefs prepare to host Polokwane City in their next match as Middendorp and the team will look to continue with their impressive run.

“What is playing a big role at Chiefs right now isn’t the talent on the field only, but the players are mentally ready. The fact that they had their coach from last season to the pre-season and now to the start of the season has helped them a lot. But I’m still not convinced that they can beat (Orlando) Pirates, (Mamelodi) Sundowns or (Bidvest) Wits. They haven’t been really tested. Having had a pre-season with the team has helped Ernst Middendorp to observe and assess his team and be able to execute his tactics. There’s a difference in the team under him between last season and now. But I have my doubts about him being a solution as a Chiefs coach,” Khanye added.
