On Saturday, TS Galaxy made history by beating Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final. Four key tactical factors in the result include Chiefs’ poor build-up play and team selection, with the decisive points as follows:

-          Middendorp makes selection gaffe

-          Chiefs press high, force Galaxy long

-          Amakhosi cross to no-one

-          Galaxy excel in midfield

Middendorp Makes Selection Gaffe

In recent weeks, Ernst Middendorp has been resting George Maluleka, seemingly with the cup final in mind. 'Mido' was outstanding in both the quarter-final vs. Cape Town City (as the defensive midfielder) and against Chippa United in the semi-final (as a box-to-box midfielder). However, he was only a sub in this game and came on at half-time to make a big impact. Middendorp also only introduced Leonardo Castro in the dying minutes. The target man has not played well of late, but was surely worth at least 20 minutes on the pitch with the score at 0-0.

Chiefs Press High, Force Galaxy Long

Dan Malesela’s TS Galaxy side are famed for playing out from the back using their goalkeeper and two central defenders, particularly the excellent left-footer, Austin Dube. In this game, Chiefs pressed very high and this made Galaxy play a lot more long passes from the back than usual. Whilst this shows Chiefs’ pressing was effective, it also meant that they could not win the ball high up.

Amakhosi Cross To No-One

Chiefs build-up play in this the first half especially was very poor. With Castro on the bench, it was a surprise to see Chiefs deliver numerous high crosses and long balls from Bruce Bvuma and Daniel Cardoso from the back. Bernard Parker was often the target and he is not an aerially dominant player. Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya was particularly guilty as he looked for long diagonal deliveries instead of linking up with his midfielders. In the second half, Chiefs were much better at playing out from the back.

Galaxy Excel In Midfield

With Maluleka left on the bench, Lebogang Manyama still rusty after almost four months out injured, Willard Katsande showing his age and Dax having a disappointing game, TS Galaxy were able to dominate in midfield with Nation Ndlovu taking the official Man of the Match award. His quick passing and closing down was excellent and he looks like the sort of midfielder that Chiefs could do with next season. The game was eventually settled by impact substitute Zakhele Lepasa, who won a penalty and dusted himself off to convert it himself.

No one can restore chiefs with current talent that we have. Its not the first time chiefs give away a nedbank cup, they did it under kompela the player who made sure that chiefs loose it was Parker.even pitso cannot do anything with those players like Parker, ntiyantiya,KATSANDE,boo ysin, mphahlele,Mahlasela, ntsha ngase,MOON,mathoho,Castro that's the whole team imagine that,CHIEFS must get RID of lee baxter he is a useless idiot.he know nothing about football he only got recommendation from his father he must pack and leave.Chiefs should also look at Athur zwane at the development side, our mxx team is not improving, to me the man has not delivered he must be sucked too.Bvuma and Akpey they need a good goalkeeper coach not lee baxter he must go
