Kaizer Chiefs will have another option in their striking department before long, if word reaching the Siya crew is anything to go by.

As confirmed by coach Stuart Baxter, striker Leonardo Castro is currently home in his native Colombia being nursed back to full fitness – and that has robbed Amakhosi of having alternatives other than Samir Nurkovic and Khama Billiat.

With Lazarous Kambole clearly out of favour and currently on the club’s transfer list, Baxter has had to rely on those two.

But there is some good news on Castro…

Indications are that the forward will make his way to Naturena at the end of the month, which is a sign that by then he might at least be ready to start training with the rest of the squad and return to action as soon as possible.

The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns striker is in the final year of his contract, so it is also to his benefit to be part of the team given that soon he and the club will be holding discussions over his future before June 30 next year.

Reports had initially suggested Castro’s return to play would be around Christmas, but that is not conclusive at the moment.

The Chiefs medical team has not assessed him since he left for Colombia to undergo rehabilitation on what is clearly a long-term injury.

Despite a topsy-turvy previous season under Gavin Hunt, who was sacked eight months into his tenure at Naturena, Castro managed 39 appearances.

But it’s his goal scoring ratio that was a worry – he found the net only nine times, a statistic Baxter will hope improves when he does finally get to use Castro.

Castro is part of the tattooes brigade in the PSL, check out more...
