Only one African appears on Forbes' Rich List of the 12 highest-earning players in football, and he earns about five times less than the world's highest-paid footballer, Lionel Messi.

Click through the gallery above to see the 12 highest-paid players in football in 2019, according to Forbes.

Forbes' Rich List, which has been published annually since 1990, was created by the well-known American business magazine and takes into account endorsements, money and salaries garnered by athletes between the period of June 2018 and June 2019 to get an accurate reading for the ranking.

For the first time ever, FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi occupies top position at the summit of the world's 10 highest-paid athletes ranking after replacing boxer Floyd Mayweather, who occupied the No. 1 last year.

The Argentine pipped arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo by $18 million (R266 million), with the Blaugrana captain pocketing $127 million (R1.87 billion), according to Forbes Magazine.

There is a $22 million (R325 million) gap between five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi and third-placed Neymar, who earned a total of $105 million (R1.55 billion) – $75 million (R1.1 billion) coming from his salary earnings with Paris Saint-Germain, plus a further $30 million (R443 million) from endorsements with DAZN, Beats Electronics, Electronic Arts, Gillette, MasterCard, McDonald's, Nike, Red Bull and TCL.

There is a massive $72 million (R1.06 billion) disparity between the Brazilian and fourth-placed Paul Pogba, who pocketed $33 million (R488 million) in the year – $500 000 (R7.3 million) more than Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta, who completes the top five.

Despite failing to impress for the Red Devils since joining them in January 2018, Alexis Sanchez occupies sixth position with overall earnings of $30.8 million (R455 million), largely owing to the staggering $28.3 million (R418 million) in salary he received from United.

Kylian Mbappe ($30.6 million, R452 million), Mesut Ozil ($30.2 million, R446 million), Oscar ($29 million, R429 million) and Antoine Griezmann ($27.7 million, R409 million) complete the top 10.

Four-time UEFA Champions League winner Gareth Bale is the only player from Real Madrid who appears in the top 12, and sits in 11th position with $27.1 million (R400 million).

Liverpool attacker and two-time African Footballer of the Year Mohamed Salah is the only footballer from Africa in the top 12, having earned $25.1 million (R371 million).

All figures include basic salaries, bonus payments and endorsement deals. Earnings listed are for the period 1 June 2018 to 1 June 2019.
