With most leagues in the 2018/19 campaign around the globe having either concluded or being in its final stretch, here are 12 footballers who have announced their retirements this season, including Petr Cech,Teko Modise and FC Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez.

The former Chelsea and Arsenal shot-stopper took to social media in January to confirm his retirement at the end of the season.
The 36-year-old has largely been forced to play second-fiddle to German shot-stopper Bernd Leno this campaign, and brings to an end a career that garnered 15 trophies in 11 years with Chelsea in addition to a further three trophies with the Gunners after joining in 2015.
Cech has the record for the most clean sheets (24) in a single EPL season (2004/05), and also holds the record for the most-ever clean sheets kept in the Premier League (202).
Before hanging up his boots for good, Cech will do duty against former team Chelsea in the UEFA Europa League final, in what promises to be an emotional affair for the Czech star.
Benni McCarthy's Cape Town City sent shockwaves throughout the country with their announcement of Modise's retirement last week.
The 36-year-old enjoyed an illustrious career and cemented his legendary status in South Africa, plying his trade for Bafana Bafana, SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and the Citizens.
The two-time PSL Footballer of the Year, who is set to assume a coaching role at Cape Town City, has won every domestic title on offer and ends his career with two Absa Premiership titles and CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, MTN8, Nedbank Cup and Telkom Knockout medals.
After spending four years with Al-Sadd SC, Blaugrana legend Xavi has not only brought an end to his stay with the Qatari club, but the Spain international also brought an end to his highly-decorated 22-year career.
Having already begun preparations for a UEFA coaching licence, the four-time UEFA Champions League winner is poised to enter the world of coaching and could well make a return to boyhood club Barcelona in the future.
The 39-year-old, who is Barca's record appearance holder with 737 matches under his belt for the club, won 32 titles in a trophy-laden spell with the Spanish giants.
