Venue: Selhurst Park

The Gunners gave new signings Oleksandr Zinchenko, William Saliba and Gabriel Jesus while Cheick Doucoure made his Premier League bow for the Eagles.

Mikel Arteta's charges patiently opened up the Palace defence in the early stages as Zinchenko came close to getting the opener after cutting inside from a pass by Martin Odegaard but his shot was pushed away by goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

The visitors eventually went ahead on 20 minutes after Zinchenko nodded a cross by Bukayo Saka back into the area, where Gabriel Martinelli was on hand to apply the finishing touches with a header past Guaita.

Patrick Vieira's troops raised their game but they only got to trouble shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale in the tail end of the first stanza after Odsonne Edouard glanced a threatening header from close range.

The hosts had a bright start in the second stanza after Eberechi Eze combined with Wilfred Zaha in the box and fired a strike from an angle that brought the best out of Ramsdale.

Arsenal looked for chances on counter-attacks as Saka came close to doubling their lead 20 minutes before time from a quick free-kick but blazed his shot high and wide at the near post.

With the game on the edge, Arteta made a double change seven minutes before time as Kieran Tierney replaced Zinchenko at left-back and Eddie Nketiah came on for Jesus upfront.

With Palace still pushing for an equaliser, Arsenal killed the game two minutes later against the run of play after a cross by Saka deflected off Marc Guehi and went past Guaita.

The Eagles tried to push for a late consolation goal but the Gunners did not give away clear opportunities, as they held on to start their Premier League campaign on a winning note.

This is indeed a great start after that humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of newly promoted side last season. I just hope these guys have the consistency to win even after X-Mas, which is where last season's campaign went off the rails to be honest.
