Mesut Ozil Reveals How Jose Mourinho Helped Turn Him Into A Star
Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has revealed how Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho gave him the confidence to become a world-class player.
The 28-year-old played under the former Chelsea boss at Spanish giants Real Madrid, but before that journey began, he played for Werder Bremen, then a mid-table team in the Bundesliga.
In the player's recently-released autobiography, Gunning for Greatness, Ozil admitted that he saw himself as "a nobody" before Mourinho came calling for him.
The midfielder, who was already a Germany international at the time, revealed that he was plagued by self-doubt and wanted assurances that he would get the opportunity to play regularly if he joined the Portuguese manager in Madrid, as he revealed in the following passage from his book.
"Yes that's what I'll give you," Mourinho told Ozil.
"A very real opportunity. Train hard. Then play. Show me you want it and I'll have you in my team. If you want to get better, I'll make you better.
"Real Madrid isn't too big a move for you. Real Madrid is the only right move. Trust me. I'll turn you into a regular player. And then all the doors will be open to you. You'll be able to show the world what you're capable of. And, believe me, that's a huge amount."
The playmaker was later sold to Arsenal in 2013, when Italian tactician Carlo Ancelotti was in charge of the Madrid club.
