Martin Odegaard was handed a start in midfield while Nuno Tavares kept his spot at left-back despite Kieran Tierny being named on the bench.

The Gunners managed to carve out the first opening after 15 minutes when Albert Sambi Lokonga's long-ball found Bukayo Saka in the box, but the youngster's first-time effort sailed wide of the mark.

Jonjo Shelvey went even closer with Newcastle's first effort on goal as Aaron Ramsdale's tipped the midfielder's powerful effort onto the crossbar.

The game began to open up thereafter as Saka raced down the wing before picking out Emile Smith-Rowe, whose header was saved by Matt Dubravka while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit the upright from point-blank range on the rebound.

While the first half ended goalless, it was the Gunners who got the breakthrough 10 minutes into the second half as Tavares released Saka, who sent a low finish past Dubravka.

That proved to be Saka's last major involvement as he made way for Gabriel Martinelli on 65 minutes, a change that made an immediate effect as the Brazilian doubled the lead a minute later with an impressive finish.

The Magpies looked to halve the deficit soon after when Miguel Almiron set up Jacob Murphy, who saw his curling effort sail just wide of Ramsdale's upright.

In the end, two goals were enough to get Arsenal back on the winning trail ahead of their next encounter against old rivals Manchester United.
