Stuart Baxter has explained the decision to name Keagan Dolly in a COSAFA Cup Bafana Bafana squad that is largely made up of David Notoane’s U23 side.

The 26-year-old attacker suffered a nasty injury while playing for Montpellier in Ligue 1 earlier in the season, and consequently missed out on the squad that faced Libya in Bafana’s decisive African Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya back in March.

Now, having got himself fully fit again, Dolly has been playing – and assisting – for Montpellier II in France’s National 3, and Baxter says that the player himself thought it might be a good idea for him to play in the COSAFA tournament as he looks to continue picking up minutes and improve his sharpness.

Baxter went on to name the former Mamelodi Sundowns man in both the COSAFA squad and in the provisional AFCON side, saying that he’s hoping the player will also come in handy for David Notoane in terms of his experience.

Speaking to the media today, the Bafana coach said, “Keagan Dolly actually asked me himself if he could get more game time... He’s played in four reserve games‚ and his coach says he’s 100 percent fit, so we’re not taking a chance with him. We’re just allowing him the opportunity to get that game time to bring up his sharpness.

“And‚ to be fair‚ to allow David the opportunity to have a more senior player as a good example to some of the younger players. So we’re hoping that in that way we make a meaningful event of COSAFA‚ and I think it’s an exciting team. We’re investing international game time into the right type of players.”

Bafana’s first game in Durban will see them take on Botswana in the quarterfinals on June 2.

He doesn't need to explain Dolly's inclusion, that guy is top notch and forever committed to the national team
