Despite a very clear statement from SAFA more than a month ago that “money was not an issue” in securing the next Bafana Bafana coach, it’s now evident that it is .....

And SAFA are going to need to up the ante if they want secure the appointment of the fans’ favourite, Benni McCarthy.

The Siya crew has been informed that while McCarthy looks set to be named as the national team head coach in the coming days, much to his annoyance his future employers have lowballed him in the final stages of talks over personal terms and available budget.

It’s been widely reported that the current AmaZulu mentor is the last man standing in the race to become the next Bafana coach, but indications are that no deal has been signed as yet and McCarthy also wants guarantees that the can bring his own technical team on board once he takes over the plum job.

The 43-year-old wants his two assistants, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Vasili Manousakis as well as goalkeeper coach Moeneeb Josephs plus his video analyst to join him at Bafana to continue their strong bond that’s currently doing wonders at Usuthu since McCarthy was hired there in December last year.

He handpicked the group when he took the Usuthu job.

It’s thought that SAFA, though keen to hand McCarthy the vacant post, have fallen short of being prepared to stump up the necessary financial commitment to show their full support of McCarthy’s appointment – and that has potentially stalled the appointment.

According to sources, the federation has also offered McCarthy a five-year contract, which would see him be in charge over two World Cups.

The hurdle when it comes to money is a shock given that firstly, an appointment of any of the mooted candidates and their support staff would certainly have been significantly more expensive and secondly, it was SAFA CEO, Tebogo Motlanthe, who told journalists on March 30 – the day Molefi Ntseki was sacked as Bafana coach – that the association would spare no costs in hiring the best available candidate.

SAFA still have to pay compensation to Usuthu for the DStv Premiership title challengers to release McCarthy and his technical staff from their current contracts, which still have two more years to run at a time the coach has turned them into potential champions.

However, it is believed that this would not be an insurmountable hurdle and that McCarthy remains focused and committed to his ambition of delivering to AmaZulu’s supporters and the new ownership – with whom it is believed McCarthy enjoys a good relationship – their best ever PSL finish before taking over the reins at Bafana.

Wether they employ benni ,pitso, baxter, mouriho or pep guadiola as long as theres politics and divisions within safa.we wont improve.we need proper development ,proper investments.and we need to be patient and give a coach enough time to built.what the use of giving a coach 5 year deal but the mandate is to qualify for world cup, when he fails to qualify he gets sacked, they pay him for the remain time and hire the other 1 who is not a favourite to some of safa members. Our football is doomed.safa does not care they Jst get fat cheques for nothing
