Last week, SportPesa ambassador Doctor Khumalo together with fellow Bafana Bafana legend Mark Fish were invited by the Equatorial Guinea government and football association as the two made an appearance in a legends’ game.
In this week’s SportPesa Clubhouse column, Khumalo shares his experience with our readers and how the national teams even made an appearance to see the legends in action.
“As some of you may know, I was out in Equatorial Guinea last week following an invitation by their government and football association to make an appearance in a legends’ game, in celebration of their independence day. I was in the company of my former Bafana Bafana teammate, Mark Fish, as we flew together. The game between Africa All Stars against Equatorial Guinea Legends XI was played on Wednesday in celebration of the country’s 50th anniversary of their independence. There were a couple of hiccups with the logistics of the trip as everything was pretty much finalised in one day, Tuesday, for me and Mark to fly out on the same day.
“They organised this event a month in advance only for them to come back and say they didn’t have enough funds and therefore our trip was shelved. They had to cancel some of the players who were initially scheduled to make the team, for financial reasons. Some of the guys who made it included Francois Omam-Biyik, who was part of the Cameroonian team that we played our first international game against. Other Cameroonians were Pierre Wome and Jean-Claude Pagal and Ivory Coast’s Abdoulaye Traore, just to mention a few of the legends who made our Africa All Stars team. It was a really good experience and Fish and I really enjoyed it.
“Their national team played Madagascar on the weekend and it was really good to see the national teams coming to watch our game. Since it had been a while since I was involved in a game situation, I really had a good game and thoroughly enjoyed myself. As usual, I had a number of victims all over the place, much to the crowd’s enjoyment. In the last 20 minutes, I was cramping and asked to be substituted, but our technical team refused to take me off. Even my teammates were against the idea of me leaving the field.”
‘16V’ went on to speak about what happened after the match. To read the full column, check out this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, issue 1095.
