Technology rules against Banyana on debut after an impressive show
For a side without a competetive national womens league- South Africa did very well- against a nation that ranks thirty-six spots above them.
Banyana Banyana went into the Fifa Womens world cup- as the second worst ranked squad at the tournament. But the debutants did not over respect Spain. Desree Ellis mentored side gave the Spanish side a run for their money. Spain boasts an experience squad that plays Womens Uefa Champions league- while their opponents still play in the Sasol sponsored league- and some rely in universities for competetive football.
Spain were the favourites and tipped t run riots over a debuting South African side. But the reigning African Woman footballer of the year, Thembi Kgatlana, had a surprise in store for the Spanish team. Kgatlana broke the dead lock and gave the nation some hope. Spain game plan did not yield results in the first half and plan B along side a much lesser power. The Video Analysis Referee [VAR] had to come to Spains rescue.
