Nigeria was barred for political reasons- so does Bafana
Bafana Bafana and Super Eagles rivalry goes back to the 1996 Afcon when Nigeria was barred from competing in the tournament by former president Nelson Mandela amid Gen Abacha’s execution of environmentalist, Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other activists.
Mandela saw it beffiting to ban the Super Eagles from coming down to the tip of the continent. Mandela's decision was made based on promoting the spirit of Ubuntu. We should let go of the pretence that everything is okay in the country. It can't be business as usual.
Afrophobic attacks in the country now have barred Bafana from playing international friendlies this Fifa weekend. When politics and football collides the soccer loving people suffer. African nations are distancing themselves from Bafana and that shouldn't be taken lightly. SAFA has to appeal with fellow African countries to forgive South Africans and play against Bafana.
Other nations will follow this trend and Bafana will not play international football. Coutries from other continents can decline proposals from SAFA to play Bafana. How Madagascar changed their minds in a split second after voluntarily raised their hand to replace Zambia remains a misery to many.
